Bath and North East Somerset Council (BANES) has extended its highways and street lighting maintenance contracts with VolkerHighways until 2029.
The highways authority said that the three-year extension to the two contracts, valued at £16m a year, will cover planned, routine and reactive maintenance and emergency responses to road incidents.
VolkerHighways also undertakes winter maintenance, gully cleansing, rural verge maintenance, event traffic management, drainage maintenance and street lighting works.
Operations director Jerry Pert said the extension is ‘testament to the team’s dedication to improving the local infrastructure and community to benefit road users and residents alike’.
He added: ‘Working collaboratively with a client who shares the same values as VolkerHighways, enables us to trial and adopt innovative solutions that improve efficiencies while maintaining quality and assurance.’
VolkerHighways said the award follows a successful five years of collaboration during which its partnership with BANES was ranked best in the South West for highways maintenance in the National Highways and Transport Satisfaction Survey.
It also topped the South West satisfaction rankings for promptly dealing with potholes, in terms of the number of potholes and the quality of repair to damaged roads.
The company said it has been a busy five years for the contract and that it has undertaken major public realm schemes in addition to day-to-day maintenance works. These include York Street and Swallow Street improvements, Keynsham High Street regeneration and hostile vehicle mitigation infrastructure schemes.
Sister company VolkerLaser has supported the contract throughout on structures and waterproofing works.
The partnership between VolkerHighways and BANES has also been recognised through the achievement of BSI ISO 44001 Collaborative Business Relationships Standard last year and an International Gold Green Apple Award.
