Bridge collapse causes M20 closure

The collapse of a pedestrian footbridge on the M20 in Kent caused the closure of the motorway over the bank holiday weekend.

The motorway was closed in both directions on Saturday (28 August) after a digger being transported on the back of a lorry collided with the bridge on the London-bound carriageway between Junctions 4 and 3 shortly after midday.

A second lorry was also involved in the incident after half of the bridge crashed down on it, with the driver treated for shock at the scene. Half of the bridge was left hanging over the southbound carriageway.

A motorcyclist suffered injuries that were described as not life-threatening.
