College offers distance learning highways courses

City of Bath College offers a range of Highways Open Tech courses which use the ‘distance learning’ method to provide qualifications in many highways-related areas.

Distance learning works in a similar way to the Open University with no attendance at College necessary and students may enrol at any time and study at their own speed, at home or at work.

Steve Hart, a highways engineer from Middlesex, studied the Professional Diploma, Civil Engineering (Highways).

He said: “The course was extremely stimulating and motivating.

“It offered me total flexibility, allowing me to study intensively during periods when I had no work commitments and then study less when I was very busy at work.

“The College’s Highways Open Tech programme offers a unique route to a recognised qualification and can be achieved without formal enrolment and commitment to a timetabled, attendance-based course.

“For mature students working in the civil engineering/construction disciplines this course format is as near ideal as it can be. “

Hart works as a Schemes Engineer for the Balfour Beatty/Mott McDonald joint venture( HA MAC 4 contract).

The College’s Highways Open Tech courses offer qualifications in a wide range of highways-related disciplines, including Highway Design, Highway Technology, Highway Maintenance, Highway Legislation and Administration, Highway Materials and Testing, Estimating and Costing, Transport Planning and Traffic Management.
