Construction sector issues guidance on shutdowns and contractual issues

The Construction Leadership Council has released guidance to construction companies and clients on how to carry out a controlled shutdown of sites and facilities where work must be suspended due to the current coronavirus threat.

The guidance is intended to ensure that any shutdown is safe and allows the site to recommence operations promptly after the suspension is lifted.

The UK Government does not require all construction sites to close. However, Breedon and Mace have already announced shutdowns and Highways understands more infrastructure companies could announce site closures shortly.

The Construction Leadership Council said that 'whether through choice or because it will not be possible to comply with the Standard Operating Procedures, many sites are closing or will close temporarily'.

Each site operator should carry out their own risk assessment that considers all local factors.
