Hertfordshire CC carrying out micro-surfacing on 365 roads

Hertfordshire County Council is investing over £4 million to give a long-lasting facelift to 365 of the county’s most weather-worn, residential roads.

Micro surfacing crews from Colas, the contractor working on behalf of the county council, have been taking advantage of the change in weather to carry out a quick, efficient and cost-effective means of extending the life of more than 460,000m2 of Hertfordshire’s roads, called micro-surfacing*.

So far, more than half of the 365 roads have been micro-surfaced and the remainder are on track for completion by August, subject to suitable weather, when an ‘aftercare’ stage will follow to raise drains and any other ironworks to the level of the newly micro-surfaced road and to refresh road markings.

Terry Douris, cabinet member for highways, said: “Some of the lesser-used roads have suffered badly with the unusually wet weather. We realise that while these are relatively minor roads, they are very important to local residents and road users. This programme of micro-surfacing is just one example of Hertfordshire County Council’s commitment to improving our road network.”
