Overnight repairs keep Belfast's traffic flowing

The overnight reinstatement of a 680m² section of one of Northern Ireland's busiest motorway junctions has been successfully completed.

The multi-junction section with traffic lights on a road bridge where the A2 Westlink becomes the M2 motorway into Belfast is widely considered to be one of the country's most heavily trafficked roads. Stirling Lloyd's Safetrack HW anti-skid surfacing and Safetrack Crack Infill was used for the re-surfacing project.

The work, being undertaken for the Road Service Northern Ireland by main contractor, Graham Facilities Management, is part of a wider upgrade of the motorway network into Belfast, including the Westlink, and represents one of the most high profile construction projects ever undertaken in Northern Ireland.

With high traffic volumes having caused serious deterioration to the surface of this road section, Stirling Lloyd's systems provided the ideal solution. Based on an advanced, fast-curing reactive resin, its high performance HAPAS-approved Crack Infill System is designed to arrest further decay of the road surface by filling any cracks in excess of 5mm, supporting the edges of the asphalt whilst preventing water penetration.

Stirling Lloyd's authorised contractor, Coatings Developments (2005) Ltd, completed the work in a ten hour overnight period, enabling the motorway to fully re-open before 7am in time for the morning's rush hour traffic.

Since the works were carried out a further 520m² section of the road has been identified for treatment.
