Martin Polland, President of the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE), wishes all IHE members a very merry Christmas.
As my time as President comes to an end, I have the privilege of addressing our members this Christmas. It’s been a very busy 2023 for the IHE and my thanks go to everyone who has helped over the year.
I take great pride in being part of a highly motivated professional team, which has continued to support new initiatives and serve our members. Without you, we wouldn’t be in such a strong position.
We are delighted to have continued to sign Professional Development Partnership agreements, both with academia and other major partners. Continuing to forge these bonds allows us to facilitate the further development of aspiring engineers, helping enable them to reach their full potential.
The success of the online training events has continued again this year. We have also seen the formation of a new London branch and discussions are ongoing about other potential branches thanks to the continued growth in membership.
I would encourage all our members to engage with local branches where possible. The branches are there to help members and are a place where they are encouraged to develop and grow their skills and knowledge. I am a great believer in trying to be the best you can be every day. My grandad encouraged me to learn something new every day and it’s something I would encourage all our members to do.
As Christmas approaches, I wish you all health, happiness and prosperity in the coming year. And we can but hope that, amid such tragic global conflicts, we see peace reign as we enter 2024. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the current conflicts.
I would like to offer my personal thanks to our members who will continue to work over the festive period delivering the vital services that will keep our country moving.
As we say here in Scotland at New Year: ‘Lang may yer lum reek.'
