VolkerLaser has won a £4m contract to resurface the main deck of the Tamar Bridge, which links Plymouth in Devon to Saltash in Cornwall.
The tolled bridge is the joint responsibility of Plymouth City Council and Cornwall Council and is operated by the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Joint Committee, comprising five councillors from each authority.
According to a contract award notice published by the two councils, the work involves resurfacing of the main deck of the bridge, including the north and south cantilever lanes.
In addition, the contractor is required ‘to safely remove the existing installed series of illuminated lane studs and ensure resurfacing work is completed to the agreed programme, to allow for prompt installation of the replacement studs by the separately appointed supplier’.
Also included within the overall scope of requirements are expansion joint replacement and resurfacing of the toll plaza area.
The notice gives the value of the contract as £3,829.425.
James Maher, divisional manager at VolkerLaser, told Highways: ‘Throughout the scheme, we will be collaborating with other specialist contractors, the client and project partners, to ensure the works are delivered safely, with as little disruption to the travelling public as possible.’
