HTMA appoints George Lee as new chief executive

The Highways Term Maintenance Association (HTMA) has announced that George Lee, head of the Road Safety Markings Association (RSMA), will take on its new full-time chief executive role.

One of the the top trade bodies in the UK highways sector, the HTMA represents contractors who manage more than 80% of the highway network within the UK. The entire industry employs around 30,000 people and the annual value of works is over £3.6bn.

Mr Lee will step down in late October from his chief executive role at the RSMA, which he has captained for two decades, to take over from Geoff Allister OBE at the HTMA in November.

Having been in the role since 2012, Mr Allister is stepping down as HTMA executive director as the organisation gears up for a restructuring process.

The HMTA said in a statement that its new, full-time chief executive role is being created to ‘build upon the strong HTMA brand and membership base, further raise the profile and influence within the sector and ensure the long-term sustainability of the association’.

Chairman Lee Rushbrooke said: ‘These are exciting times for HTMA as we take the association into its next phase as the leading voice within the industry. The recently published 2017- 2022 HTMA Strategy clearly states the strategic priorities for the association as we look to continue to collaborate with our clients, other associations, industry groups and the supply chain, and this new position is part of our planned strategy.

‘We are delighted to have George Lee joining us, bringing his extensive sectorial and representational experience to keep moving the association forward and to build on the great work Geoff Allister has successfully delivered.’

Mr Lee is a well-known and popular figure in the highways sector, having transformed the RSMA into a highly regarded organisation that leads in sector development, commercial and representational activities.

He has extensive experience in stakeholder engagement, corporate governance and policy development and is a member of the Institute of Directors and of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment.

Mr Lee said: ‘The HTMA’s positive focus on best practice and industry standards, its singular approach to engaging with stakeholders at all levels and its willingness to share knowledge across the sector are key attractions for me in joining the association.

‘It is these factors, along with their clear desire to continue the development of the organisation and the sector as a whole, which made this too exciting an opportunity to turn down. I have worked with RSMA since 1997 and been involved in transformational change in the road marking sector; I look forward to building on that experience in my new role.’
