Highways Agency lifts roadworks ahead of bank holiday

People travelling during the late May bank holiday weekend will benefit from over 98% of England’s motorways and major A-roads being free of roadworks.

The Highways Agency will be clearing eight out of 10 sets of roadworks to help people on their way over the bank holiday weekend. More than 200 miles of roadworks are being completed and a further 130 miles suspended between Friday 24 May and Tuesday 28 May.

Simon Sheldon-Wilson, director of traffic management, said: “The Highways Agency is helping people have better journeys on our roads this bank holiday. We are lifting or completing over 340 miles of roadworks on England’s motorways and major A roads.

“We provide a wide range of services, including our iPhone app and new mobile website, to help people plan their journeys, and we ask everyone to take a few minutes to check their route at the latest conditions before they set off. Our traffic officers will be monitoring the network and on standby to deal with any incidents and keep traffic moving.”

Friday evening and Saturday lunchtime are expected to be the busiest over the bank holiday weekend.

In all, 66 sets of roadworks are due to be completed on the Highways Agency’s roads ahead of the bank holiday. A further 37 sets of roadworks and lane restrictions are due to be removed by 6am on Friday 24 May and will not be put back before 00:01 on Tuesday 28 May. Lane restrictions or temporary speed limits will need to remain in place at 18 locations for the safety of drivers and their passengers.
