IN-SITU RECYCLING...Still a sustainable future for Britain’s roads
Stabilised Pavements Limited is a specialist in-situ road recycling company based in The Midlands, working with highways clients throughout the UK, both as a specialist sub-contractor and on occasion, Principle Contractor.
Operating independently the business prides itself on delivering great customer service built on decades of highway experience, technical expertise and a highly trained workforce operating state of the art plant and equipment. Investment in our own plant and labour in terms of technological advances and training is a highly prioritised aspect of the SPL operation.
Industry design guides and the RSTA’s Code of Practice safeguard a client’s investment by controlling how the treatment is specified and carried out following extensive site investigations, with testing on-site during the work demonstrating compliance.
In-situ recycling has long played a vital Asset Management role for highway authorities and despite budgetary constraints, through early involvement and efficient programming, its wider use on both Trunk Roads and rural unclassified roads is increasing.
With a Design Life of 20 years, high recycled content and low carbon footprint, the treatment provides a cost effective and environmentally sustainable highway maintenance technique for clients and supported by SPL’s technical expertise and culture of innovation, the technique is increasingly employed to overcome challenges ranging from soft ground conditions through to rapid reconstruction.
Recent adaption of the Deep In-Situ delivery has seen the development of our (two times) Green Apple Award winning “REGEN” process: a bespoke shallow recycling treatment designed to provide a cost effective structural solution for failing rural unclassified roads. Initiated and refined through Norfolk County Council and Norfolk Laboratories as well as collaboration with Skanska and their client Cambridgeshire County Council, it is our firm belief that together we have created an affordable, suitable and sustainable solution for many rural carriageways.
Born out of a need for a cost effective solution, SPL have taken great encouragement from authorities embracing REGEN as an alternative to extensive carriageway repairs allowing the re-shaping of the carriageway structure and delivered complete with a robust double surface dressing.
Whilst many clients appreciate the sustainable benefits of utilising materials already present in the road for reconstruction, motivating factors are very often around quicker build times, reduced lorry movements as well as the strategies and solutions around dealing with the issue of tar contamination.
