Lafarge Tarmac invests in new equipment

23/04/2015 | HIGHWAYS REPORTERS

Lafarge Tarmac has made a multi-million pound investment in a new fleet of equipment and machinery as it gears up for expected growth from the government’s £16bn investment in the strategic road network.
The company’s contracting division continues to win highways projects with local and national highways authorities across the UK. This latest investment supports the business’s growth plans and will ensure that it is geared up to meet growing customer requirements created by the investment in the strategic road network.

Paul Fleetham, managing director at Lafarge Tarmac Contracting, said: “This new equipment will help us to build upon our existing strengths and capabilities, and continue delivering more effective, safe and cost efficient highways projects for our clients.”

The Solihull-based company - which has over 6,600 employees across 330 sites in the UK - has invested in 12 Volvo and 16 Vogele pavers, all of which have the latest energy-efficient engines, lighting and windscreens to enhance the operator’s environment, and the levelling technology. The new investment also includes:

•    State-of-the-art pavers for major schemes: Tracked high production Volvo 8820 pavers with the capability of laying over 300mm in depth to a width of over 6.5m. The machines are also equipped with GPS levelling capability and will be used on major schemes laying both cement bound and bituminous products. In addition, Vogele Super 1803-3i, Volvo 6870C and tracked 6820C pavers have been purchased and are currently being used on high-profile schemes including projects with the Highways Agency.
•    Latest HGVs promoting safety: 50 new heavy goods vehicles and trailers, which are all Euro 6 and CLOCS (Construction Logistics Cycle Safety) compliant to promote an efficient and safe environment in which the vehicles work.
•    Range of planers: 5 Wirtgen planers featuring a 2m, three tracked 1m and one 350mm type
•    Risk-reducing streetmasters: 60 2CX JCB Streetmasters, as part of Lafarge Tarmac’s  commitment to reducing the risk of Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome in the workplace
•    High-tech compaction equipment: Over 80 pieces of compaction equipment, including rollers, which feature the very latest in technology and engine efficiency.

Lafarge Tarmac’s contracting business has delivered work on a number of high profile schemes including the A43 Corby Link Road, Heathrow Airport North & South Runway resurfacing and the A11 Thetford.
