NMC secures £3.5m of new contracts in Yorkshire

24/09/2013 | HIGHWAYS REPORTERS

North Midland Construction (NMC) is working on a number of highways improvements in Yorkshire after securing new contracts that have a combined value in excess of £3.5 million.

The company started work in August to transform Saltaire roundabout for City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council. The junction is a notorious local bottleneck for commuters travelling from across West Yorkshire into Bradford and on to the M1 motorway. The junction will be realigned and traffic signals installed to enable increased throughput at the junction. Local safety improvements and bus priority measures will also be implemented as part of the scheme.

The largest scheme, which is due to start in October, is for Leeds City Council and involves the construction of a new junction on the A64 York Road at Whinmoor, east of the city centre. The junction will form the entrance to a new housing estate being built by Persimmon Homes and Taylor Wimpey. Traffic signals will be installed to minimise the impact caused by increased traffic to and from the new estate. The project will include highway construction work, sewer construction and utility diversions, as well as the diversion of Grimes Dyke via a new concrete culvert.

Sabby Khaira, principal engineer in engineering projects for Leeds City Council, said: “We are confident that NMC will deliver this complex highways project successfully within programme, to budget and to a high standard.”

The third contract, another highway scheme, is for Wakefield Council. NMC will realign the highway to serve a new industrial estate at Featherstone. The work, on Green Lane, started in September and involves full depth highway construction, utility diversions and the creation of a new signalised junction. Access to the existing industrial estate will be maintained throughout.

Geoff Poyzer, managing director of NMC’s highways and utilities division, said: “We have completed many construction projects across Yorkshire over the past 10 years or so, both for the local councils and for private clients. This has given us a strong local knowledge and excellent relationships with local companies who are vital in the delivery of these crucial works. We have a proven history in successfully delivering some of the most complex highway schemes that are out there, working sensitively in busy live environments to ensure that disruption to road users and pedestrians is minimised. Our aim is to deliver these projects with the utmost consideration to the local environment and local people.”
