New Year’s Honours sees highways and transport professionals recognised

Highways Reporters

The chief executive of FM Conway was one of a number of highways and transportation professionals recognised in the New Year’s Honours list.

Michael Conway (pictured) was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to UK construction, infrastructure support and road safety.

He said: “Receiving this award is a great honour. It comes at a time of significant and sustained growth for FM Conway and is testament to the ongoing success of the business. I am extremely proud of the contribution we’ve been able to make to London and the south east’s infrastructure and development needs, and in particular FM Conway’s work to promote road safety within the construction industry. None of this would have been possible without the efforts of our wider team of talented colleagues and partners.”

Elsewhere, two staff from Transport for London received honours. Giles Barker has been recognised with a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to transport in London and the disability community and Brendan Sleight has been recognised with a (BEM) for services to transport in London and the Armed Forces Covenant.

Giles, from Kings Langley, Hertfordshire, has been a pioneer both within and outside of TfL, breaking down the barriers that people with disabilities face.

Brendan, from Morden, London, has proven himself to be a role model both to those inside and outside of TfL, encouraging young adults and those within the Armed Forces to consider a career within the transport industry. Brendan is currently the Chair of TfL’s Ex-Forces and Reservist Staff Network Group, which supports employees who have previously been in the Forces or are reservists.

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “I am delighted that Giles and Brendan’s hard work has been recognised with these well-deserved honours. Their vital contributions have made a huge difference to both Londoners working at TfL and those travelling across our transport network.”

Other honours:

Professor Peter Malcolm Jones, who is an independent transport commissioner, was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for voluntary services to national transport policy.

Also awarded to Caroline Wake of the Channel Tunnel Safety Authority’s UK Delegation and Hugh Wark – former project director for Scotland’s Borders Railway.

Roger Mackintosh - senior executive officer, traffic and engineering, Department for Transport awarded an MBE for services to transport.

Katherine Liddell of Network Rail awarded an MBE for services to transport in the East of England.

Ian Ward of the Isle of Wight Community Bus Partnership awarded a BEM for services to community transport.
