Resurfacing programme underway in Stoke

Stoke-on-Trent City Council is embarking on a multi-million pound resurfacing and patching campaign.

Almost 400 roads and pavements across the county will be repaired and improved over the next 12 months.

Thirteen new staff - including two apprentices - are being taken on as part of a £7.2 million investment which will see main roads, estate roads and pavements either completely resurfaced or selectively repaired. The council is investing £5m towards the work with the remainder coming from the government through the Local Transport Plan and the Pothole Action Fund.

In total, 380 roads and pavements will be treated over the next year, the equivalent distance between Stoke-on-Trent and Blackpool (83 miles).

Councillor Jack Brereton, cabinet member for transport and heritage, said: “We know the standard of our roads and pavements is a big concern for our residents, which is why we are making this level of investment.

“The number of roads and pavements we will be repairing over the next 12 months is an unprecedented amount. This will make a big difference to people’s lives, improving the state and appearance of our streets and neighbourhoods.

“We have listened to residents who have told us that while main roads have work carried out on them and are generally in good condition, estate roads where people actually live have gradually deteriorated.

“It’s clear that we have to do something to bring our roads up to a good standard. By carrying out this work now, it will reduce the chance of potholes and other defects appearing in the future."
