An estimated £1m raised through Sheffield’s Clean Air Zone (CAZ) will be used to improve air quality near schools, the city council has said.
Introduced in February 2023, the CAZ has raised a total of £2.3m through charges and fines.
The city council will use the funds to improve cycling facilities, extend 20mph zones and support the School Streets programme, which closes main roads outside schools during drop-off and pick-up times.
Cllr Ben Miskell, chair of the council's Transport, Regeneration and Climate Committee, said: ‘Using the funding we get from the Clean Air Zone will allow us to continue to work with schools across Sheffield to cut the amount of harmful gases, help improve air quality and encourage people to get to school in an active and sustainable way.
‘Our new Clean Air Investment Plan will help us to improve children’s health and give people more choice about how they travel.’
