Work on major Staffordshire road scheme set for spring completion

11/02/2016 | HIGHWAYS REPORTERS

Work on a major road scheme in Staffordshire which will support a business development and create up to 2,200 jobs is due to be completed in spring.

The 12-month reconstruction of part of the A34 at Meaford near Stone will pave the way for the construction of the new business park and gas fired power station by developer St Modwen. With over three-quarters of the job done, the project team says work will finish before the Whitsun weekend in May.

The scheme, which was the county’s second Government Growth Deal funded project to get off the ground, includes the construction of new roundabouts on Meaford Road at its junctions with the A34 and Rookery Lane to allow easy access to the business park site. Meaford Road has been realigned and a new 300-metre road built into the business park. Access for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders is also being improved.

Staffordshire County Council’s economy leader Mark Winnington said: “The Meaford scheme is an important one for Staffordshire as it will pave the way for over two thousand jobs and significant investment. This is the largest brownfield development site in the county and one we all want to see brought back into productive use. Our supporting works have not just been about building a new roundabout – it’s all of the infrastructure that will make the site developable. This is an important development for Staffordshire which will bring real economic benefits to our county.”
