Eurovia Surfacing is thought to be the first UK contractor to trial a fully electric highways-class paver at full operational scale.

Delivered in collaboration with Dynapac and SMT GB, the paver can operate for up to 10 hours on a single charge and can lay over 1,000 tonnes of asphalt in a shift.

It is powered by a 294 kWh battery and delivers up to 235 kW of power through five electric motors. 

Eurovia stated that this new technology marks an ‘important step' in the company's drive towards sustainable construction, providing a ‘unique opportunity' to assess the operational, environmental and commercial benefits of zero-tailpipe-emission paving technology in the real world.

The company expects to generate ‘valuable operational data' on productivity, battery performance, charging infrastructure requirements, operator acceptance and whole-life costs, which it hopes will help inform future fleet electrification and investment decisions.

According to Eurovia, the technology has the potential to offer ‘significant' benefits.

It expects that, thanks to zero tailpipe emissions and substantial noise reductions during operation, the new machine will help improve air quality, reduce disruption during night-time and urban works and create better working conditions for our site teams.
