King Highway Products has unveiled a new enhanced mobile carriageway closure (EMCC) vehicle, designed to meet all operational requirements for National Highways' much-celebrated GG117 standard, covering rolling closures on the strategic road network.
Published in January 2024, the GG117 is a 'design and implementation of temporary traffic management and road works' standard. It encompasses temporary traffic management and the operational requirements for how closures, including rolling road closures, must be planned, monitored and reviewed to protect road workers and road users.
Together with the EMCC vehicles deployed during the rolling closures, the standard has been highly praised by industry experts for creating a secure, traffic-free working zone, helping teams operate safer and more efficiently while staying protected from live traffic.
On top of this, digital technology developed in partnership with Race Technology connects the work area to King's EMCC vehicles upstream while they are carrying out the rolling block. The system alerts crews instantly if any unauthorised vehicle breaches the closure, providing an extra layer of safety in high-risk environments.
King has entered the market with a short-term hire option, through its own rental division ‘King Rental', after manufacturing an initial fleet of eight EMCC vehicles.

The vehicles are also fitted with Police-approved ANPR camera systems enabling a successful prosecution if the block is breached. When acting in conjunction with the standard third rear sign face, this enables the vehicles to be used as camera enforcement vans.
King Highway Products' EMCC has been engineered to meet all the GG117 requirements, giving traffic management providers 'a fully compliant solution', the company said.
