The winners of the Highways Awards 2022 were announced on Wednesday night at a glittering gala dinner at a packed new and larger venue.

Star turn Ed Byrne and Highways editor Dominic Browne led the proceedings, with a thoughtful contribution from Institute of Highway Engineers president Martin Polland.

The evening also raised more than £1,500 for Highways' charity partner, Mind.

The Apprentice of the Year Award went to Daniel Johnson of Ringway Jacobs (Cheshire East Highways), while the Lifetime Achievement Award recognised the huge contribution to the industry made by Local Council Roads Innovation Group (LCRIG) founder Will Britain, who retired from Blackpool Council this year.

Speaking to Highways after winning their awards, both said they were 'stunned' and nearly speechless at the news.

The judges felt Daniel's willingness to learn and develop new skills shone through in a very competitive field, while his key role in identifying and challenging a design issue showed how far he has developed at this stage in his career.

They added that the faith his employers have in him is testament to his potential within this industry.
