Highways has launched a new series of events, Sustainable & Resilient Highways, in partnership with the Road Surface Treatments Association (RSTA) to encourage authorities and suppliers to collaborate on building a new future for maintenance strategies.

With CPD accreditation provided by the Institute of Highways Engineers (IHE), these events will bring together the UK highways institutions, local authorities and contractors to examine maintenance for a net-zero future, optimising highway funding, resilience for extreme weather and climate risks and preventative treatments, permanent patching and end-of-life solutions.

Mike Hansford, CEO of the RSTA, said: ‘These technical events offer an opportunity for technicians, engineers, asset managers or directors to come together to share ideas and experiences, discuss best practice, and provide inspiration about how they might approach their road maintenance strategy differently. Making best use of highways funding, informing proposals for decarbonisation of road maintenance, whilst addressing the pothole crisis facing the UK.'

Taking place across four days this summer at a range of different locations, each event will provide an opportunity to connect with others working towards a more sustainable road network whilst continuing your career development over the course of a day.

With free attendance for those from the public sector, the events will take place on:

  • Thursday 28 May – London
  • Thursday 4 June – Scotland
  • Tuesday 16 June – Northern Ireland
  • Thursday 9 July – Birmingham

Jon Munslow, chair, UKRLG adaptation, biodiversity and climate resilience board adaptation lead, said: ‘These Highways Live events will give you insight into what sustainability is for future highways maintenance. A mix of the strategic and the practical of asset management that will help you drive out carbon, build resilience and manage into the future.'

Lyle Andrew, chief executive of the IHE, added: ‘Maintaining Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is vital in a fast‑moving, safety‑critical industry like highway engineering. A structured and proactive approach shows your commitment to high professional standards. By choosing CPD that is relevant and aligns with your goals, you stay current, adaptable, and ready for the demands of advancing technology.'
