Transport Scotland has announced new 20mph speed limits for several communities across Argyll and Bute that will come into effect immediately.

Five locations will see the implementation of these new reduced speed limits:

  • Ardrishaig
  • Connel
  • Inveraray
  • Tarbert
  • Tarbet

The new limits are planned to be implemented through a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO), so that Transport Scotland can monitor and evaluate whether they should be put in place permanently after an initial 18-month trial.

Signs that have already been constructed and installed in some places will be uncovered and come into effect from today (7 November).

Cabinet Secretary for Transport Fiona Hyslop said: ‘Road safety remains an absolute priority for the Scottish Government, and that is why we are investing a record £48 million this financial year into roads safety activity and programmes. One death is one too many and I am focused on making our roads safer through Scotland's Road Safety Framework to 2030.

‘Reducing excessive speed is a key focus of that work. Research shows that if someone is hit by a car at 20mph, they are seven times more likely to survive than if they were hit at 30mph.

‘The implementation of more 20mph speed limits will improve road safety – keeping people safe and making it easier for people to choose walking, wheeling and cycling for everyday journeys.'
