Kier Group chief executive Stuart Togwell has joined the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) as deputy co-chair.

Mr Togwell took on his role at the head of Kier last autumn, replacing Andrew Davies, and has now replaced Richard Robinson, regional president for AtkinsRéalis, at the CLC.

Prior to his current role, Mr Togwell served as group managing director for construction and group commercial director at Kier. He also spent 31 years with Wates Group, where he held the position of group commercial director.

In his new position with the CLC, Mr Togwell will have responsibility for the council's delivery of three of its five priorities, including net zero, biodiversity and circular economy.

Alongside Mr Togwell's appointment, the CLC also named Lilly Gallafent, COO of Cast, as industry sponsor for the digitalisation of planning and building control systems and Paul Beeston (partner at Rider Levett Bucknall) as industry sponsor for business model reform.

Mr Togwell said: ‘With nearly 40 years' experience in this fantastic sector as well as leading one of the UK's largest contractors, I am delighted to be joining the CLC and being a voice for the industry as well as bringing together all parts of it together to find solutions for some of the most pressing issues.'

The CLC is co-chaired by Mace Construct executive chairman, Mark Reynolds CBE, and industry minister Chris McDonald.

Mr Reynolds added: ‘I was very pleased to announce today, alongside my co-chair Chris McDonald MP, that the Construction Leadership Council has appointed a new deputy co-chair and two new industry sponsors for the two new priorities we launched earlier this year. This follows an exhaustive interview and selection process we have been running over the past few months.'
