Spencer Group ‘stalwart' Glen Smithson has retired after 33 years with the business.

Spencer Group said operations director Mr Smithson played a ‘huge role' in the growth and success of the company over the past three decades and has helped deliver major bridge engineering projects across the UK while ‘earning the respect of colleagues, clients and industry partners alike'.

To mark the occasion, Spencer Group presented Mr Smithson with a ‘once-in-a-lifetime' Spitfire flight experience, which it dubbed ‘a fitting tribute for someone who has spent a lifetime helping Spencer Group soar to new heights'.

Gary Thornton, managing director of Spencer Group, said: ‘It's official. After a lifetime of service to the business Glen has decided it's time to retire. Over the years he has supported many of us, sharing his experience and knowledge and always with a large dose of laughter.

‘Thanks for memories Glen, it's been a blast! We thought a flight in a spitfire was a fitting send off…have fun and all the best for the future.'
