WSP has appointed Iain Carmichael as its new managing director for Intelligent Infrastructure in the UK and Ireland.

Joining WSP from Ricardo, where he spent the past 10 years working in roles ranging from MD for Asia in Hong Kong to MD for rail in London, Mr Carmichael brings extensive senior leadership experience that ‘further strengthens' WSP's intelligent infrastructure capability.

With over 30 years of international experience, Mr Carmichael has led engineering, rail, energy and environmental businesses across Asia, Australia, the Middle East, North America, the UK and Europe.

He has a background in systems engineering, operational safety, risk management, independent certification, and the delivery of complex and safety‑critical programmes.

Darren Reed, executive managing director for transport and infrastructure for WSP, commented: ‘Iain brings an exceptional track record in systems integration, safety, operations and complex programme delivery. His global leadership experience, combined with Ricardo's depth of expertise, strengthens our ability to help clients transition to more digital, data‑enabled and resilient infrastructure. We're delighted to welcome him into the WSP team.'

Mr Carmichael added: I'm excited to be joining WSP at a pivotal moment, as our combined capabilities with Ricardo create new opportunities to shape the future of intelligent, connected infrastructure. Having spent much of my career delivering safety‑critical, technically demanding programmes across the world, I'm looking forward to working with colleagues and clients to integrate systems, data and engineering in ways that improve performance, reliability and long‑term resilience.'
