Highways England has issued more guidance to its suppliers following the comprehensive lockdown measures announced by the prime minister this week.

The Government-owned company has reiterated its intention to continue working, in line with Westminster's position on construction sites.

The email sent to the industry by a senior Highways England boss, and seen by Highways, highlighted that the Government's policy is 'to continue construction activities so long as safe procedures are followed'.

'The Highways England Executive fully supports this approach. Therefore I am confirming that we are maintaining all activities as close to business as usual as possible whilst keeping a close eye on developments,' the email said.

'Please ensure that your teams have the maximum possible protection aligned to both the latest Government advice and Constructions Leadership Council's advice and that you are minimising the risk of spreading Covid-19 so that we can continue to operate as safely as possible whilst fully supporting our employees and the country.'

Workers in Scotland are facing a very different environment, with Transport Scotland suggesting all construction sites should close even in the roads sector, except for essential road maintenance to repair defects.
