New research from UBS suggests that monetisation of the in-car experience in driverless vehicles could be worth nearly half a trillion dollars by 2030.

It says selling advertising and services to be consumed while someone rides in a vehicle without having to drive it will be worth $472 billion, and that Waymo’s parent Google could corner 60% of that market.

The website Quartz (qz.com) says that, while producing cars and components is still expected to be a good business once cars are autonomous, providing the driving experience is seen to be the biggest and best opportunity.

It adds that driverless taxi services are predicted to be worth $1.2tn, and that it is “interesting” that UBS’s report makes almost no mention of the other big four tech companies, Apple, Amazon, Facebook and Microsoft as key players.
