FM Conway has picked up a sustainability award in recognition of its approach to sustainable construction.

The company won the Resource Management Award at the 2013 ENDS Green Economy Awards. The awards recognised FM Conway’s company-wide commitment to recycling materials from the UK’s roads.

The ENDS Green Economy Awards took place at a ceremony at One Moorgate Place and are run by the ENDS Report, a leading environmental journal.

The win capped a string of successes for the company, which also scooped a Special Award from the Mineral Products Association for its leading work on cycle safety.  The company was one of the first in the UK to fit its fleet of vehicles with equipment such as cameras, alarms and side guards to help drivers to detect cyclists.

Michael Conway, CEO at FM Conway, said: “Sustainability is at the heart of the service we provide for communities, local authorities and transport organisations in London and the south east. We think carefully about how we can re-use materials from our projects, and have invested in our business to ensure we can work sustainably.

“Using materials responsibly is crucial for the environment – but it also helps to reduce costs for local authorities and residents by cutting the need for expensive raw materials. We’re delighted to have picked up a second award in such quick succession.”

FM Conway has invested over £25 million in its recycling facilities since 2005 and will open a second asphalt recycling plant in London in 2014 to support its highways work across London and the south east.

FM Conway’s re-use of materials prevents over 450,000 tonnes of construction waste from going to landfill each year. The company’s approach to construction allows it to recycle virtually every material that results from its work – from the surface of roads to water waste from roadside gullies.
