CECA: New Prime Minister must commit to infrastructure

The Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) says new Prime Minister Theresa May must commit to infrastructure in her first 100 days in post.

CECA) has said that by the autumn, the new government must:

• Decide on airport expansion in the south east



• Take steps to ensure Hinkley Point C goes ahead



• Commit unequivocally to HS2



• Maintain existing plans for spending on the UK’s road and rail networks



• Set out a clear plan and timetable for negotiating the UK’s future relationship with Europe



• Provide clarity on the new Apprenticeship Levy, or delay its implementation



• Solidify plans for regional growth.

CECA chief executive Alasdair Reisner said: “The priority for our new Prime Minister must be to ensure stability of government.

“Now that the UK has voted to leave the European Union, international connectivity will become even more important for the British economy. This is a clear opportunity to make a decision on airport expansion, and demonstrate to the world that UK plc is open for business.

“At the same time, the government must provide certainty on other elements of the country’s infrastructure investment pipeline. After three weeks of uncertainty, the new government must hit the ground running, and commit to a bold infrastructure agenda.”
