Colas Leeds the way with northern growth

08/06/2021 | CHRIS AMES

Colas has won a place on a £60m highway and civil engineering works framework with Leeds City Council, one of a number of new contracts and contract extensions in the North.

Leeds has announced that Colas is one of two contractors on its four-year Minor Works Contractor Framework, which is for the provision of various types of highway and civil engineering works, primarily within the Leeds district.

The framework runs from 7 June 2021 to 6 June 2025, with work instructed on an as-and-when basis up to a value of £60m. The other successful tenderer was Bradford-based Hinko Construction.

Colas said it is looking forward to continuing to work with Leeds City Council on highways within the city, having recently completed several schemes that have included the City Connect 3 cycle highway and Merrion Way paving and bollard scheme.

The firm said it has secured multiple new contracts and contract extensions in the North, and has relocated its offices in Leeds to larger premises to better accommodate an expanding team.

Louis Ledoux, director of regional operations for the North, said: ‘Colas is committing to growth in the North of England and has opened in March 2021 a new central regional office to support that ambition.’

Colas has also secured a place on all 12 lots of the £88m Yorkshire Alliance Framework for Surfacing and Planing Works, led by Kirklees Council. The framework, which is for two years and started in March, is to provide surfacing and planing works for carriageways and footways on both highway and non-highway sites.

The firm also secured a place on Lot 2 of Lancashire County Council’s framework for General Vehicle Restraint System (VRS) Systems Repair, Replacement, Maintenance and Inspection. The four-year framework will see Colas replace life expired, damaged and non-standard VRS across the county until 2025.

The NEPO Civil Engineering & Infrastructure Works framework also started in March 2021, and Colas is one of 27 suppliers named, while the firm said the recent confirmation that the YORcivil 2 Framework has been extended by a further two years until August 2023, saw it retain a place on seven lots within the framework.

The A-one+ joint venture of which Colas is a one-third partner has recently agreed a contract extension with Highways England until March 2022 for the design and construction activities for the 2021/22 capital works programme in Area 12, Yorkshire and Humberside.
