The Telegraph says this will “help end the misery” of drivers caught by what the paper calls “stealth” cameras. This is contrary to industry evidence suggesting accidents are significantly reduced when average cameras are implemented.
The Telegraph says Transport Minister John Hayes has “ordered Highways England to examine whether speed limits at roadworks can be “safely” increased beyond the current maximum of 50mph.”
It adds that he has also asked the agency to reduce the length of roadworks to a maximum of 10 miles and encourage more use of contraflows on the other side of motorways to reduce disruption.
Highways England is currently testing a 60mph limit for roadworks on the M1 between junction 34 and 35a near Sheffield in South Yorkshire.
