New Symington Bridge opens to traffic

Symington Bridge in Scotland opened to road users for the first time last week.

The bridge will improve access by providing road users with safer access to and from the A77.

Other improvements that form part of the scheme include the construction of Bogend Toll Bridge, which is due to open in the coming weeks, new footways and cycleways, a new bus turning area in Symington and the new Whitelees Link Road.

A spokesperson for Transport Scotland said: “Works have been progressing well on this project and we are now at the stage where road users can start to reap the benefits.

“These bridges will undoubtedly make these junctions much safer, with road users being able to join and leave the A77 without having to cut across oncoming traffic.”

As part of the Bogend Toll Bridge works, the southbound carriageway will undergo resurfacing works. These will start on 31 March and take around three weeks.

The spokesperson continued: “Following consultation with road operators and the police, we have arranged to undertake these works following the opening of Bogend Toll Bridge, minimising the extent of diversions, and also undertaking the majority of these works during the Easter holidays when we expect the roads to be much quieter.”
