Road Safety Foundation executive director Dr Suzy Charman has been recognised with a major award by a national road safety organisation.
Dr Charman won Road Safety GB’s Achievement Award at its national road safety conference this month.
She is a leading expert on the Safe System with nearly 20 year of experience.
Before joining the Road Safety Foundation, she was head of international road safety at TRL, and before that she was responsible for overseeing the establishment of the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP).
Dr Charman’s nomination submission said: ‘Having the gift to either excel technically, or to lead others, or perhaps to persuade ministers to give millions of pounds to road safety is special. To have all of these qualities and succeed in each, is exceptional.
‘She has so often recognised skills in others, as she sits on judging panels for a number of other awards, it would be fitting for her at last to be the award winner and not always the judge.’
She told Highways: ‘People who work in road safety are brilliant people – devoting their time and effort to stopping death and serious injuries on our roads. So, to be recognised as having made a difference in this sector is particularly humbling and a true honour.’
She added: ‘Thanks to the RSF team (Kate Fuller, James Bedingfeld and Brian Lawton), RSF’s Board and Council, and the iRAP family – it really is a team effort.’
Corporate Awards were presented to Acusensus and GEM Motoring Assist. Acusensus UK manager Geoff Collins wrote on LinkedIn: ‘I do enjoy picking up an award and all the more so when it is unexpected!’
Road Safety GB is a national road safety organisation made up of representatives from groups across the UK, including local government road safety teams.
