Clearview Intelligence's road stud technology has been reselected by National Highways for use in the major maintenance works it is carrying out in the Hindhead Tunnel in Surrey.
The installation of 860 of the company's Intelligent Road Studs forms part of National Highways' planned carriageway resurfacing programme in the tunnel on the A3.
National Highways describes the Hindhead Tunnel as ‘one of the UK's most important road tunnels'. Since opening in 2011, it has carried the A3 beneath the Devil's Punch Bowl and forms ‘a key strategic route' between London and Portsmouth.
The resurfacing works have provided an opportunity 'to renew the lane guidance system, as the existing studs are integrated into the carriageway' Clearview said.
The IRS2 system uses hardwired, high-intensity LED studs that ‘actively illuminate lane markings' instead of relying on vehicle headlights like conventional reflective road studs.
This system provides ‘highly visible lane guidance' within the enclosed tunnel environment and can also be integrated with traffic management system to allow the illuminated studs to respond to changing operational requirements such as lane closures, maintenance activities, contraflow arrangements and incident management.
The Installation of the updated system is being undertaken by Clearview Intelligence with support from Lochwynd Contractors, with associated white lining works delivered by Wilson & Scott. Half of the studs will be installed in the south bore before the remaining 430 are fitted in the north bore.

Overnight closures are being used while the work is being carried out, allowing the tunnel to reopen to traffic each morning while specialist teams continue renewing the infrastructure behind the scenes.
When approached by Highways, Clearview Intelligence declined to disclose the value of the contract.
