Highways can reveal that star of TV and radio Vernon Kay will be the celebrity host at this year's inaugural Highways Champions Awards - which has also extended the deadline for nominations.

A familiar face and voice to millions, Vernon Kay brings energy, humour and a genuine connection to the people who keep Britain moving.

His father was a truck driver who spent his working life on the UK's roads and it gave Vernon a first-hand appreciation of the dedication, professionalism and commitment shown by those working across the highways and transport sectors every day.

Also announced today, the nomination deadline for the awards has been pushed back until 30 June after a huge late rush of entries.

The awards event is on 4 November, InterContinental London Park Lane and tables are booking fast.

Highways Champions Awards celebrate the individuals who go above and beyond to make our roads safer, more efficient and better for everyone.

Already the award submissions have gathered a wealth of amazing and inspiring stories.

One entrant played a central role in significantly improving the safety of frontline highway workers. They acted as the key operational link between site teams and policing. This person led the introduction of a remote-controlled lifting solution designed to improve safety during lifting operations by removing the need for personnel to work in close proximity to suspended loads.

Another entrant has led pioneering work in harnessing big data. This work represents a significant shift away from traditional reliance on historic collision datab by analysing large-scale, real-world driving behaviour.
