Regional civil engineering specialist Griffiths has appointed a new managing director, securing the services of a former senior figure at Balfour Beatty.

Stephen Tomkins (pictured) was Balfour Beatty's operations director and led on operational safety and construction and quality, overseeing a wide range of infrastructure and construction projects.

He will now lead Abergavenny-based Griffiths on the back of a 25-year career in civil engineering and construction, in which he has delivered a variety of high profile, award-winning projects in highways, rail, regeneration, infrastructure and the marine sectors.

He is also a fellow of the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation.

Founded in 1968, Griffiths is one of the leading civil engineering and rail contractors working throughout Wales, the Midlands and South-West England.

In 2018, Tarmac Contracting acquired Griffiths for a reported sum of around £36m.

Paul Fleetham, managing director of Tarmac Contracting, said: 'We are very pleased to welcome Stephen to Griffiths. His leadership skills, experience and passion for the civil engineering sector will be a huge asset as we continue to move the business forward.'
