Civil engineering contractor Cormac has launched a new safety campaign to raise awareness of the risks its workers face while maintaining Cornwall's roads.

Tying in with Brake's Road Safety Week (16 - 22 November 2025), the ‘Home Safe and Well' campaign encourages road users to ‘slow down and exercise caution' when driving near roadworks, as well as school crossing patrol sites.

Over the past three years, Cormac's 500 operatives have been faced with three physical assaults, 46 reports of verbal abuse, 33 incidents of road users ignoring road closures and 30 drive-throughs near schools whilst working on 4,660 miles of Cornwall's road network.

Cormac states that ensuring everyone's safety during essential maintenance and construction, as well as at school crossings, is a ‘top priority', but adds that working in close proximity to live traffic is ‘inherently' going to increase the risk of injury.

To tackle this risk, the contractor is rolling out ‘key initiatives' as part of this campaign, such as a trial of body-worn video cameras at one of its school crossing patrol sites and short videos sharing the experiences and stories of its workforce, due to be released this week.

Cormac managing director Dominic Bostock said: ‘We ask everyone to be more aware of the dangers faced by our workforce and to act respectfully and patiently towards them. Sadly, incidents involving carelessness and abusive drivers are on the increase. Everyone has the right to feel safe at work. Nobody should ever be threatened, intimidated or assaulted because of the job they do. And yet this is a scenario faced by many of our workforce on our roads all too often.

‘By combining new technology and engaging storytelling, we are optimistic that these initiatives will foster a stronger sense of community and encourage a commitment to safety and respect. Our ultimate goal is for everyone on Cornwall's roads to make it home safe and well to their families every day.'
