Arup has poached a Department for Transport (DfT) former deputy director, Joe Gaytten, who is now taking on the role of associate director for economics and case-making at the global consultancy.

Mr Gaytten, who previously spent two years as the deputy director of future transport systems, has also spent nearly three years as the chief economist for the Northern Ireland Office.

Mr Gaytten also brings experience with the East West Railway Company and the Treasury.

Sharing the news of his career move on LinkedIn, Mr Gaytten said: ‘I want to express my gratitude to a great employer.  I won't embarrass individuals by naming names, but thanks especially to:

'Those who were so kind and patient with me as I settled into a new career which I had little prior understanding of. The managers and mentors who helped me grow professionally to extents I wouldn't have thought possible. The stakeholders in industry, academia, devolved administrations and the charity sector who gave me time of day when there was no obligation to. The brilliant teams I had the honour to be part of and then lead. The hiring bosses who took a chance on me. And later on, the Department for Transport for backing me and other colleagues in Birmingham and Leeds to work on making the Places for Growth vision a reality.

‘Here's to a brilliant network of colleagues I'll be sad to leave behind.'
