Bill Smith, the former Glasgow lead for Arup's Cities, Planning and Design team, has announced his retirement after more than 30 years working across transport and planning.

Mr Smith worked as a senior professional technical officer for the Scottish Government, after starting his career as a planning officer for Devon County Council in 1990.

He also served as a strategic planner for Glasgow and Clyde Valley's Joint Structure Plan team and a transport planner for Strathclyde Passenger Transport.

In 2006, he started a nine-year stint as technical director for WSP in the Middle East, where he oversaw business development in the region.

He then joined the American engineering firm, CH2M, as its transport planning director for Scotland for just over a year, before he made his switch to Arup.

Announcing his move, Mr Smith said: '"Retirement" seems a very final term, but definitely time to look ahead and focus on other things.

‘I've enjoyed a fantastic career, working with incredible people, on amazing projects, in some of the most interesting places in the world. Thanks to everyone I have met, and who has helped me along the way, and hopefully I have managed to help a few of you too!

‘Now to spend some time with friends and family, and watching some rugby at Braidholm.'
