She has also previously spent time at the DfT, having spent a year on secondment as a walking and cycling projects advisor, followed by a further six months as interim head of behaviour change projects.

Sharing the news on LinkedIn, Ms Wiles said: ‘After four fantastic years at Active Travel England, I'm delighted to take the next step in my career journey as the new Head of Active Strategy at the Department for Transport.

‘It's been so exciting to be part of a new agency as it finds its feet. I've gained a huge amount of experience and worked with too many amazing, talented and dedicated people to list… so I'm very glad to not be moving too far away, and still staying in the wonderful world of active travel!'
