Teams of highways staff have come together to help keep our coasts clean on a litter-picking day along a section of the Norfolk seafront.
With participation from organisations such as National Highways and GRAHAM, road workers spent the day picking up litter along the waterfront in Gorleston-on-Sea, collecting 22 bags of litter.
Dean Birch, supplier relations manager at National Highways, commented: ‘It was great to see so many people from a number of organisations come out to help clean up the beach, which is used by so many – including the gulls! It is a shame to see the amount of litter both on our roads and surrounding areas, and we urge people to put their rubbish in bins or take it home with them.'
Originally planned as part of the Great British Spring Clean, bad weather meant the event had to be reorganised for this month.
With 22 volunteers from seven organisations, the key aim of this effort was to ‘maintain a shared commitment to protecting the environment'.
National Highways stated that its supply chain partners ‘actively support the communities they operate in'.
Lynsey Harris, GRAHAM social impact business partner, added: ‘As I took part for the third year, I was proud to once again represent GRAHAM. Each year reinforces our commitment to strengthening communities, supporting positive environmental action, and leading by example. Being involved in this initiative reflects not only my personal passion, but also GRAHAM's dedication to creating meaningful, long-lasting social impact.'
It is this commitment to supporting the community – as well as exceptional skill, selflessness, bravery and ingenuity – that the Highways Champions Awards were created to recognise.
With so many champions working tirelessly across the sector to improve not only our roads but our communities as well, we must support and celebrate those who are putting in the hours, whether it's on the front lines or anywhere else. Be sure to submit your nominations here before midnight tonight!
