Jon Shortland has been appointed Essex County Council's new interim director of highways and transport.

Mr Shortland has just under  40 years of experience working within the highways industry for both the public and private sectors. Most recently, he spent the past month as group manager for planning policy for the South East Lincolnshire Councils' Partnership. 

Prior to his time in Lincolnshire, he held the position of assistant director for city transport at Sheffield City Council.

He has also worked as the chief officer for Bedford Borough Council, where he was responsible for both the planning and highways services and then later planning, infrastructure and economic growth.

Mr Shortland also spent nearly 10 years as an account director for Amey, where he managed the Bedfordshire highways MAC contract.

Essex County Council has been approached for comment.
