It is with sadness that Highways reports the founder of O'Rourke Construction and Surfacing, John 'Sean' O'Rourke, passed away earlier this year at the age of 89.

Mr O'Rourke was described as a 'respected craftsman and leader' by those who knew him best, known for his integrity, technical excellence and the way he mentored so many in the trade. His funeral drew more than 150 attendees, including many former employees and industry colleagues.

Born in County Leitrim, Ireland, Sean, as he was known, moved to the UK in the late 1950s and began his career as a road surveyor in the asphalt industry.

He started with Wimpy in Greenwich and, after many productive years, founded O'Rourke Construction & Surfacing in 1981/82. From modest beginnings, he built a thriving London-based business employing around 60 people and specialising in quality road surfacing and civil works.

A hallmark of his approach was his insistence on quality workmanship and genuine partnership - proven by the fact he forged enduring sub-contracting relationships with major names including Laing O'Rourke.

He retired in 2007/08, proud of the company and community he had built.

In March 2011, the company was acquired by an investment consortium and has since evolved into O'Rourke Contracting Plc.

In later years, Mr O'Rourke was supported through illness by his devoted wife Maureen, his children Tracey, Shane and Martin, and his many friends.

His son Martin O'Rourke said: 'His life and work helped lay the roads beneath our feet and the professional standards the industry continues to follow. His example endures in every well-laid surface.'
