National Highways has notified the market of plans to procure an incursion warning radar system to be fitted to traffic officer vehicles, with the contract valued at up to £5m.

When linked to wearable devices on traffic officers, this radar system is intended to warn them when a vehicle is in close proximity and could cause harm.

It is expected that each of National Highways' 400 traffic officer vehicles will be fitted with one of these radar devices.

According to the road authority, the contract is likely to include:
  • Production and supply of compatible devices
  • Fitment to a vehicle (or this may be self-delivered by National Highways)
  • Calibration of equipment
  •  Software servicing & updates
The procurement is expected to take place between April and September next year and the contract is set to run from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2031, with a possible extension to 2035 bringing the total potential contract length to nine years.
Suppliers wishing to engage with National Highways must do so by 23 November 2025, with the tender expected to be published by 1 March 2026.
