A report in the Daily Telegraph suggests that the use of self-driving cars will cut £265 off the price of car insurance premiums, because they will "eliminate bad driving".The report says that, as driverless cars become the norm on British roads, accidents caused by human error will all but cease to exist.It quotes "industry experts" who say that technology for automated parking and motorway driving is developing at such a pace.
John Leech, head of auto at consultancy KPMG, told the newspaper: "Insurance premiums could halve once vehicles which communicate with each other and an 'autopilot mode' when driving on the motorway are developed ' this is likely to happen by approximately 2020."
The report further predicts that, when it comes to the thorny issue of accident liability, it will fall upon the manufacturers rather than the owners to take responsibility for injury or damage because it will be seen as a product failure.
