As concern is raised about the fall in the number of traffic convictions blamed on the reduction in the number of traffic police offices, the camera company Vysionics says technology is capable of filling the gap.Talking at Intertraffic, Director Geoff Collins told Smart Highways editor Paul Hutton that speed enforcement and cameras can replace police and has been done very successfully but a lot of people are "putting thought" into how to achieve greater levels of enforcement.  "With improving technology you can detect and improve and enhance how things are done and I feel that this is going to be happening more in the UK with a range of different offences being detected by newer technologies."We have collaborated with Navtech Radar on something which should allow the detection of close-following vehicles.  It's not just a camera but a more intelligent, joined-up approach that should be more effective and efficient than a traffic officer driving up a road to witness and identify something."Collins says we should expect to see more examples of technologies like this going forward. In the interview he also talks about the speeding up of the approvals process, but the need for it to remain robust, and also about the latest on the company's strategy since its acquisition by Jenoptik. You can hear the interview in full here:[audio mp3="http://smarthighways.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/geoff-collins.mp3"][/audio](Please note, due to some electrical interference at the Amsterdam RAI, this interview has a high pitched whistle in places.  Apologies for this and we hope it doesn't spoil the value of the excellent content).
