The U.S. Department of Transportation is reportedly awarding a $7.5 million grant to the City of Detroit, the State of Michigan, the University of Michigan and the American Centre for Mobility in Ypsilanti to boost research, development and testing of self-driving cars.

Testing in Michigan is said to be taking place at the robotic-car test facilities at U of M’s Mcity, the American Centre for Mobility and the streets of Detroit.

Transport Topics reports the funding comes from the Transportation Department’s Automated Driving System Demonstration Grants programme and is part of $60 million being doled out for autonomous car testing by the Trump administration.

Senator Gary Peters, a member of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee said, “This investment will help keep Michigan at the forefront of mobility, and ensure our state remains the global leader in developing self-driving innovations and building the vehicles of the future,” according to Transport Topics.
