EM engineer wins ICE award

An engineer from EM Highway Services has received a prestigious award from the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

The Tony Chapman Medal has been awarded to senior structures engineer Gareth Scott (pictured) who is based in Penrith and works for EM on its Highways Agency Area 13 MAC contract.

The award, which promotes the awareness of newly qualified incorporated members, is awarded annually to the best member professional review (MPR) candidate.

As one of only three finalists Gareth was invited to present his project at the final held at the ICE headquarters in Westminster, London. He successfully sat his ICE professional review in 2013 and unknown to him at the time, his reviewers had also nominated him as a finalist for the medal.

He said: “I am humbled and thrilled to receive such an amazing award. I hope that my success provides motivation, encouragement and inspiration to everyone who wants to pursue their own professional qualification.”

On awarding the Medal to Gareth, the judges said: “Gareth should be highly commended for delivering an impressive presentation and evidencing his undoubted knowledge of the project during the question and answer session.”

His project presentation was based on the refurbishment of the A65 River Lune Bridge at Kirkby-Lonsdale in south Cumbria. It involved temporarily supporting the structure internally while defective concrete was removed and replaced.

Gareth will receive his award at the prestigious ICE awards ceremony in London in the autumn.
