Lighting upgrade forms part of A465 works

Highways Reporters

A major road upgrade is underway on the A465 Heads of the Valleys road in South Wales with SSE Enterprise awarded the contract to install 500 new street lights along the route.

An 8km conversion between the Glanbaiden junction at Gilwern and the Brynmawr roundabout will see the road upgraded to two lanes in each direction.

SSE Enterprise’s lighting team has been awarded a contract to upgrade lighting and signage along the 8km stretch.

The project is joint funded by the European Union and the Welsh Assembly and will see approximately 500 new street lights with LED lanterns installed on the A465 dualling.

SSE Enterprise’s Welsh lighting services team will fit the new lights along 8km of the dualling over a two-year period.

SSE Enterprise, lighting delivery manager Chris Wallis, said: “SSE Enterprise is very proud to be chosen to work on such an influential project in this area. The works on this road will improve access to jobs, services and markets in the area and result in significant regeneration of the Heads of the Valleys.

“We were successful in tendering for this project largely due to our excellent past safety records in performing works of this nature. Our knowledge and experience in the sector combined with our nationwide coverage of personnel means we are in a great position to deliver this scheme to the highest standard.”

The upgrade is part of a wider Government scheme to turn the whole of the A465 from Abergavenny to Neath into dual carriageway by 2020.
