Walton Bridge to open

A new road crossing over the River Thames will officially open later this month.

The newly completed Walton Bridge in Surrey is the first road crossing built over the River Thames in more than 20 years.

Around 220 tonnes of asphalt have been laid on top of 1,200 tonnes of concrete to create the smooth surface that will be used by more than 30,000 vehicles a day.

John Furey, Surrey County Council’s cabinet member for transport, highways and environment, said: “Now we really are well down the road to opening this new landmark over the famous old river. Good transport links are vital to Surrey’s economic growth so, by investing in projects like Walton Bridge, we are investing in the county’s future prosperity.”

Last year Transport Minister Norman Baker described the £32 million crossing as a scheme that would “aid economic growth”.

The bridge will provide access to major employers, schools and shopping centres.
